The traditional toys of Myanmar are mostly made of paper-mâché, but colorful and attractive. These toys are usually sold on the stairways of pagodas all over Myanmar. They differ in size, style, idea, meaning, and color giving each of them a unique definition and expression.
Although these toys are rarely played with by modern-day children in urban cities, they are still kept as souvenirs at home. But for the rural children, those lovely toys are something more than they can imagine.
For generations, traditional paper-mâché gifts like Pyit Taing Htaung (Humpty Dumpty), Oh Si (Drums), Poe-Wa-Yoke, Zee Kwet (Golden Owls), Nwar Yoke (Painted Oxen) and etc., have been a rite of passage for young children across Myanmar.
Usually sold at stalls near pagoda entrances, they are crafted by hand, with strips of glue-soaked newspaper plastered around a wooden mold and left to bake in the sun.
Each toy is a labor of love, taking between three and five days to complete.
